It’s that time of year and sunscreen is officially back in the conversation. 🌞

Sunscreens are marketed to be applied to the body every single day and you know my thoughts on that. If it’s a product you are using a lot, the ingredients matter more than anything else. It is also important to note that anything you put onto your skin can be absorbed into the body. It’s also possible for the sunscreen to be inhaled (if you have ever been behind someone at the beach with those horrible spray sunscreens you know what I mean) 🤣😪

The most important ingredient to avoid in sunscreen is oxybenzone. According to the research, it is readily absorbed by the skin, can cause allergic skin reactions and also behaves as a hormone disruptor. Sunscreens can also contain synthetic fragrance, so make sure to watch out for that too especially if you have MCAS or chemical sensitivities.

Sunlight has so many proven health benefits and has helped my personal health conditions immensely! I do wear sunscreen when I am going to be in the sun for long periods of time, especially because I am more prone to getting freckles. But I am not afraid of the sun!

Switching to non-toxic sunscreen is a swap I made several years ago and I have never looked back!

I have been working on something new for my emails based on all of your requests and DMs! 👀

Here’s how it works:

Instead of a list of meal ideas, I’m giving you a set of building blocks. This week that includes: a protein, a sauce, a breakfast, a lunch you can batch and freeze, a sweet treat and a drink. Everything is gluten-free, dairy-free and I’m also providing low histamine notes and options (highly requested).

You can mix and match throughout the week however works for you. You don’t have to follow anything perfectly! You’ll just know that your fridge (or freezer) is stocked (which is truly the best feeling) and then you can also listen to your body and cravings!

And here’s the part I’m most excited about…

Every single component comes in three versions based on your energy that day:

🟢 Good energy day: make it from scratch, enjoy the process, double the batch and stock your freezer!

🟡 Medium energy day: use some shortcuts. Frozen peppers, jarred beans, store-bought rotisserie chicken. Still nourishing, but half the effort.

🔴 Low energy day: use all the shortcuts and keep it as simple as possible. This is your permission to do the bare minimum and still eat well!

Because your energy is not the same every day and that’s ok!! Personally, I also like to just prep a few things at a time to conserve energy!

Anyways, when it comes to making non-toxic swaps, I firmly believe you should focus on what you’re consuming every day because that’s what’s going to move the needle the most. For coffee, we usually use our glass cold brew maker and that’s what I drink more regularly. So our typical day to day coffee is being stored in a glass jar.

When it comes to making non-toxic swaps, I know it can be overwhelming. A lot of creators and professionals approach it in a fear mongering way saying you should never eat XYZ and never have XYZ in your house or you will die or some horrible health issue will occur if you do. (Please unfollow the people telling you that vegetables are toxic 😭). The nuance here is that exposures are cumulative. And we all have to decide what is most important to us.

For example, personally I wouldn’t use traditional candles because they contain endocrine disruptors. Am I going to my friends’ houses knowing they use them? Yes. Am I still going to get a toxic no chip manicure every once in a while for a trip? Yes. Will I ever get botox? No. But we all have to choose our exposures and we all react differently.

When it comes to my home, I try to keep it a pretty non-toxic space. Most importantly, I don’t stress about it. I have made SO many non-toxic swaps (I have been doing this for 7-8 years btw)- so when you see me talking about non-toxic furniture and large home swaps, I just want you to remember that. So if you have just started, try swapping one item when you run out of it.

Let’s talk about something most people never think twice about: what your home smells like.

I used to burn candles all of the time! It felt like self-care. Then I started looking into what’s actually in them and I haven’t bought a conventional candle since. Honestly I can’t even be in a room with one now without getting a headache. If you’re managing MCAS, histamine intolerance or any inflammatory condition, synthetic fragrance is one of the most underrated triggers in your home and it was one of the first swaps I made after my diagnosis.

Most candles, room sprays, and plug-ins (don’t even get me started on those) contain synthetic fragrance. “Fragrance” or “parfum” on a label is a catch-all term that can legally represent hundreds of unlisted chemicals, many of which are known endocrine disruptors. For anyone with MCAS or chemical sensitivities, these can be direct mast cell triggers. Your home is supposed to be your safest environment. Here’s how to keep it that way. 👇

What to look for on the label:

Honestly, there are so many great non-toxic candles and fragrances, there is no reason to buy toxic candles anymore!

🕯️My recommendation if you're starting out: Skip the fragrance all together. Ditch the toxic candles, room sprays and especially the plug-ins. If you love having your home smell nice, buy one non-toxic candle and start there. Swapping to cleaner ingredients shouldn’t be overwhelming. Just start simple!

**Prenuvo kindly gifted me this scan, but as always, my review of this experience is my honest opinion!

What is a Prenuvo scan?

Prenuvo offers a full body MRI that screens major organ systems for hundreds of conditions with whole body imaging. The imaging is able to detect solid stage 1 cancerous tumors. On average, Prenuvo alerts 1 in 20 people to a potentially lifesaving finding. Prenuvo’s mission is to provide a transformative approach to healthcare, which I love!

How much does a Prenuvo scan cost?

Prenuvo offers different packages starting at $1199. They kindly gave me a discount for you to get $300 off!

Is Prenuvo covered by insurance?

Some people are able to get their scans covered or partially covered by insurance. You would have to contact your insurance provider directly! Prenuvo is actively working to gather the required evidence needed to drive health insurance coverage.

What is the scan like?

You change into scrubs and have to remove any metal or jewelry. The scan takes less than 60 minutes. You are able to listen to music or watch TV for the duration of the scan! The clinics provide a relaxing and spa-like atmosphere! The MRI machine is also open at both ends.

Is there any contrast or radiation?

There is no contrast or radiation, making it a safe and proactive screening tool.

How long does it take to get your results?

Results are typically delivered within 5-10 business days, but I got mine really quickly!

Who explains the findings?

You can schedule a call with Prenuvo’s medical provider to interpret the scan. This was really helpful for me to understand what showed up on the test!

What did your test show?

Luckily my test did not show much and gave me a lot of peace of mind! They let me know that my spine shows normal degeneration for someone my age, which is great considering I have a connective tissue disorder.

I have a small liver spot which is probably benign (my doctor ordered an ultrasound just to be sure) and some benign cysts in my reproductive system.

I also have dense breasts, which means I should be screened more closely, but I already knew that!

The main finding that I have to follow up on is that my thyroid is enlarged and I have two small thyroid nodules. I am following up on this with my doctor by doing a full thyroid workup and getting a thyroid ultrasound to take a closer look at my thyroid.

It is so reassuring to know that the rest of my body systems look great!

My friend and I went to visit our friend in Philly (we have all been friends since high school and it was so nice)! Unfortunately, when we got to the airport on Sunday to leave, our flight was delayed. We got to the airport pretty early, so I had only had some breakfast sausages and matcha for breakfast. I had assumed that we would be home in time for a late lunch. I assumed wrong.

I had overheard a few pilots chatting and knew immediately that something was wrong. Eventually, they announced that they needed a replacement piece from our plane and that piece was coming from Chicago (where we were headed). Why it couldn’t have come from somewhere closer like NY, we will never know.

They gave us the tracking information for the flight that was carrying the piece and we were able to see that it hadn’t taken off yet. Our original flight kept getting delayed and delayed. Eventually, we went to go sit in the United lounge which was completely packed. We chatted with other people who had their flights pushed back days!

Eventually, we made the decision to switch flights because it slowly became nighttime and it was still showing that the flight with the piece had not taken off. All United gave us this entire time was a lunch credit, which I used to get pistachios. So basically I was running on pistachios and electrolytes at this point but I was down to 2 electrolyte packets.

As we went to board our new flight (after sitting at the airport the entire day), that flight was delayed due to an issue with the crew. We saw that (somehow) our original flight was taking off, so we quickly switched back to that one.

Unfortunately, our bags did not make it with us. Spoiler alert: we also never made it out of the airport. Our flight sat on the tarmac for hours due to weather. The plane was HOT and when I asked for a water bottle they told me they were running out of water :)

I honestly thought I was going to pass out because I was so dizzy. Once we got the go ahead to take off, our crew timed out. So we were brought back to the gate around 11 pmish with no directions or instructions. We were told we would get a hotel voucher (we never did).

We also had no clue where our luggage was. I was using my AirTag to track it. There was no one working at the airport. They were out of car seats. There was luggage stranded everywhere. Every single hotel within 5 miles of the hotel was booked. I had made the (dumb) decision to pack my protein powder and bars in my suitcase because I thought I wouldn’t need them since we were heading home.

A kind airport worker tried to track down my suitcase and couldn’t find it. That’s because it was about to take off on a different Chicago flight and the doors had already closed. So our suitcases made it to Chicago that night, but we didn’t.

We decided (around 1 am) to Uber an hour back to our friend’s house where she had laid out pajamas and toothbrushes for us because we had no clothes or toiletries. Luckily my supplements and medications were in my backpack (I always keep them in there)! I also had groceries at her house from shopping earlier that weekend so I was able to make myself chicken tacos! Barely eating all day when you have blood sugar issues is honestly SCARY! I need my protein!!

We took a quick nap and headed back to the airport to take a different flight home. All in all, this was a horrible travel experience. The worst I ever had. But it taught me a lot about what I need to do in order to travel successfully in the future.
