Cleaner BBQ Swaps 🌭🍔
Better-for-you swaps for your summer bbq!
Happy Sunday! The weather here kind of sucks today unfortunately, but it’s officially the first day of summer which means grilling season! There’s honestly nothing better than grilling outside on a warm, sunny day with friends or family and enjoying a delicious meal. If you have food allergies or intolerances though, these types of gatherings can be a little tricky.
That’s why I’m not only going to share my swaps, I’m also going to share how I navigate these situations. Everyone is different when it comes to severity of food allergies, intolerances, etc. The options here are: bring your own food, use tinfoil or a pan to cook your food on the grill safely (ask if they can cook your food first) or cook your food inside separately.
Gluten and common allergens can frequently hide in BBQ marinades, rubs, sauces, so it’s important to double check ingredients. There is also literally no reason for these brands to be using high fructose corn syrup when we have so many other options available that are better for our bodies.
Most importantly, these are suggestions and if you are spending time with family and friends and enjoying yourself- it’s ok to consume some imperfect ingredients (not allergens obviously)! Balance is important too!
Below, I’m sharing all of my favorite gluten-free, dairy-free and better-for-you grilling swaps!
CLEANER BBQ SWAPS: CONDIMENTS
BBQ SAUCE:
Primal Kitchen: This brand has a variety of delicious BBQ sauce flavors with simple ingredients!
Noble Made: Noble Made also has great options for BBQ swaps and cleaner condiments! They make a mustard BBQ sauce.
Date Lady: This BBQ sauce is sweetened with dates and contains no corn syrup or sugar. It’s also organic!
MUSTARD:
Organicville: I love that this mustard has super simple ingredients!
Primal Kitchen: This is a great option for spicy mustard and they also have regular mustard as well.
Eden: This is a great swap for mustard with super simple ingredients.
MAYO:
Primal Kitchen: This brand has a great avocado oil based mayonnaise!
Chosen Foods: Chosen Foods makes a simple avocado oil based mayonnaise!
SAUCES:
Chosen Foods: This is a great swap for a burger sauce and it’s made with avocado oil!
Primal Kitchen: This brand uses clean and simple ingredients and it’s made with avocado oil. They have SO many amazing sauce flavors now.
KETCHUP:
Yo Mama’s: This brand is a great option! It has simple ingredients and is non-GMO!
Primal Kitchen: Primal Kitchen is one of my favorite condiment brands! Their condiments have simple ingredients. I love that their ketchup doesn’t have any added sugar, natural flavors or high fructose corn syrup. It is also organic!
Sir Kensington’s: This brand also has super simple ingredients, no high fructose corn syrup and no natural flavors! It does have sugar, which is something to note if you are trying to avoid it!
Good & Gather: This is an easy, better choice option that you can grab at Target!
Organicville: This ketchup is organic and made with agave nectar!
Smash Kitchen: Organic, no high fructose corn syrup. A very cost effective swap!
PICKLES & RELISH:
Grillo’s: Grillo’s pickles are so good and they use simple ingredients!
Cleveland Kitchen: Multiple flavors and simple ingredients!
Bubbies: A better option for pickles! They also make a relish with very simple ingredients.

CLEANER BBQ SWAPS: MEAT
Teton: These are a great swap for sausages. They are grass-fed and use simple ingredients.
ButcherBox: ButcherBox has high-quality meat options and you can get it delivered straight to your doorstep. Use code LAUREN20 for a discount!
Applegate: I love that Applegate makes cleaner hot dogs that use organic meat and simple ingredients. They are also 100% grass-fed. They also make organic turkey burgers!
Diestel: This brand makes high-quality and organic frozen turkey burgers with super simple ingredients!
Bilinski’s: This sausage brand makes a wide variety of sausages that come in different flavors. They all have clean ingredients and they are super delicious!
The Organic Meat Co: This brand also makes organic grass-fed beef burgers!
Force of Nature: This brand makes 100% grass-fed beef patties. You can also grab their ground meat and make your own burgers.
Amylu: This is a delicious option for a chicken burger with better-for-you ingredients!
CLEANER BBQ SWAPS: BREAD & BUNS
Pacha: These sprouted buckwheat muffins are made with super simple ingredients. Use them to make a burger or a grilled chicken sandwich!
Young Kobras: I love this sourdough bread so much. Toast it up and use it for a sandwich.
Simple Kneads: This bread is organic and top 9 allergen-free! It also comes in multiple flavors.
Base Culture: This brand is probably the easiest one to find because it is in stores. It does contain egg though!
Queen Street: A hamburger bun option with better ingredients.
AWG: This bakery has tons of great options!
Bedrock Bakers: An English muffin option with clean ingredients!
Bread Srsly: These dinner rolls work well for sandwiches too!

Primal Kitchen: This brand has so many amazing sauces and dips! Pair them with your favorite chips for the perfect BBQ snack!
Siete: Simple ingredient salsa to pair with your chips!
Zack’s Mighty: We are obsessed with these tortilla chips! They have great ingredients too.
LesserEvil: Their Moonions are hands down my favorite snack. They are so nostalgic and taste like Funyuns! I am obsessed. I also love their popcorn!
Grillo’s: Grillo’s makes a great pickle de gallo dip!

Halfday: Ingredients aren’t perfect but it’s a fun summer drink!
Loonen: This water is the absolute best. Plastic-free, PFAs free and so smooth.
Fresh Fizz: Organic soda with clean and simple ingredients! I love these so much.
