Happy Saturday! This week, we are focusing on non-toxic clothing swaps (as requested by you guys in my subscriber chat)! When it comes to non-toxic items, I think clothes can feel especially overwhelming. Many of our clothes are toxic because of the harmful chemicals used throughout the textile production process, from farming raw materials to manufacturing and dyeing fabrics. During the farming stage, especially in conventional cotton farming, heavy pesticides and herbicides are used, and these chemicals can linger in the fabric even after processing. In the manufacturing process, toxic dyes and finishes are applied to fabrics to achieve certain colors, textures and properties. Many synthetic dyes contain harmful heavy metals, while formaldehyde is often used to make clothes wrinkle-resistant. Additionally, PFAS, commonly known as “forever chemicals,” are frequently applied to fabrics for waterproofing, stain resistance and durability, remaining in the environment and our bodies for years.
The toxicity issue is even more pronounced in synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon and acrylic, which are made from petrochemicals. These fabrics often shed microplastics during washing, polluting waterways and potentially entering the food chain. Moreover, clothes treated with antibacterial or odor-resistant coatings may contain harmful chemicals, which pose health risks. New clothes can also release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particularly when they’ve been treated for waterproofing or wrinkle resistance. The chemicals in fabrics can be absorbed through our skin, especially when we sweat, leading to potential health issues ranging from skin irritation to hormonal disruptions.
The environmental impact is just as concerning. Many of these chemicals end up polluting ecosystems when wastewater from textile factories is released into rivers and oceans. Unfortunately, the health risks from wearing these toxic clothes aren’t well-known to most consumers, even though they are part of our daily lives. I share all of this not to create fear, but to help you become a better consumer.
When it comes to clothing, I still participate in trendy fashion and I like to wear cute work out sets. From my point of view, it is all about balance. Fashion is really fun for me and not something I am willing to completely compromise on yet and that’s ok! I think a good way to view this is to be intentional with your purchases moving forward.
My goal is to invest in high quality and non-toxic pieces that will last me a long time. I also swapped over all of my underwear and many of my pajamas to 100% organic cotton. Underwear touches a sensitive area and we spend 1/3 of our life in our pajamas- so these are great places to start!
