Happy Saturday! This week, my broadcast channel requested I focus on sunscreen swaps! First, letβs break down why some of these sunscreens may not have the BEST choice ingredients.
Sunscreens are marketed to be applied to the body every single day and you know my thoughts on that- if itβs a product you are using a lot, make sure you are using a high quality one. It is also important to note that anything you put onto your skin can be absorbed into the body. Itβs also possible for the sunscreen to be inhaled (if you have ever been behind someone at the beach with those horrible spray sunscreens you know what I mean) π€£ πͺ The most important ingredient to avoid in sunscreen is oxybenzone. According to the research, it is readily absorbed by the skin, can cause allergic skin reactions and also behaves like a hormone disruptor. Sunscreens can also contain fragrances, so make sure to watch out for that too!
For more information on sunscreen, I highly recommend this article by EWG.
I know sunscreen is a controversial topic, so make sure youβre doing what is best for your body, your skin, your genetics and your health and make sure to consult your doctors. Personally, I donβt agree with Bryan Johnsonβs idea that we should fear the sun and staying out of the sun completely is best for your health. Sunlight has so many proven benefits and has helped my personal health conditions immensely! I do wear sunscreen when I am going to be in the sun for long periods of time, especially because I am more prone to getting freckles and there is a history of skin cancer in my family!
Switching to non-toxic sunscreen is a swap that I made several years ago and I have never looked back!
All Good: All Good is another great sunscreen brand! I have been using their sticks for forever! I love that they make it so easy to apply.
Sabal: Sabal sunscreen is free from harsh chemicals, fragrance-free, gentle and doesnβt have a white cast!
Cocokind: I love the bright packaging on this one and I love that it works well for sensitive skin! It is also fragrance-free!
Dime: This is a cleaner option! I havenβt personally tried it yet (though I am going to this summer), but I have heard people really like it! LESSWITHLAUR gets you a discount on their website!
Two Peas: This was actually the first non-toxic sunscreen brand I tried back in the day! I love that itβs organic and gentle on skin!
Sky and Sol: This sunscreen is safe and non-toxic with edible-grade ingredients. It is also eco-friendly and reef-safe!
Badger: I love this brand because they have so many different options! From face sunscreen, to baby sunscreen, to kids sunscreen and more! You can grab them all on Amazon, which is so convenient. If I forget sunscreen when Iβm traveling, I always head to Whole Foods and grab some!
All of the previous swap emails can also be found in the swaps section of my Substack if you ever need to reference them! The great thing about Substack is that I can also edit and update the posts to reflect new brands Iβve found- so I will be able to keep these guides up-to-date! β€οΈ
What other swaps are you curious about? Let me know below!
I do have an honest question because I see sunflower seed oil in a lot of healthier swaps, but it is still a hydrogenated oil. Iβve been very careful about avoiding ingesting it but I would think it would be bad on our skin as well right? I was looking at the badger brand.
